Raegan Revord's reaction about the end of Young Sheldon after season 7 highlights just how much The Big Bang Theory prequel failed Missy.
SUMMARY
- Young Sheldon's cancellation disappoints fans, including actress Raegan Revord, who expressed her heartbreak over the news on social media.
- The show's ending is motivated by the need to align with The Big Bang Theory's established canon, with Sheldon's impending move to Pasadena being a key factor.
- Young Sheldon failed to capitalize on Missy's popularity and has underutilized her character, despite her being a fan favorite and having the potential for a compelling story arc.
As Young Sheldon ends, Raegan Revord's reaction to the news emphasizes just how much the family comedy failed Missy. An era of The Big Bang Theory storytelling on CBS is wrapping up after it was announced that Young Sheldon season 7 will be the show's last. Rumbles about the matter began earlier this year as the Young Sheldon season 6 finale approached.
That being said, the dual strikes of the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA delayed the verdict. Now, it is official: Sheldon and the Coopers are bidding everyone goodbye after its shortened season 7 run, which will only be composed of 14 episodes instead of the usual 22.
Young Sheldon's end is primarily motivated by The Big Bang Theory's established canon. The prequel is closely approaching a point in the timeline where Sheldon needs to leave Medford, Texas to move to Pasadena, California, and begin his post-graduate studies at Caltech.
Despite this, there were hopes that Young Sheldon's popularity, especially after it posted show-high ratings in season 6, would be enough reason for CBS to order at least one more year of the prequel. Unfortunately, that isn't the case. This disappointed many fans of Young Sheldon who have been invested in Sheldon's family's story. Aside from them, however, Revord is quite distraught with the series' cancelation.
Raegan Revord Is Heartbroken Over Young Sheldon’s Cancelation
Since news broke out that the family comedy is wrapping up, Revord has commented on Young Sheldon's ending twice now. Firstly, she commented on co-star, Iain Armitage's post, writing "Can’t stop crying. My family forever!"
Subsequently, she shared her own message on her official Instagram account, delving a bit deeper into what she truly feels about the matter. In it, she doubles down on feeling heartbroken. While she also mentions how grateful she is for the last few years of being in the series, it's clear that she is distraught over Young Sheldon wrapping up after season 7.
This shouldn't be surprising for those who closely follow Revord on social media, considering her constant behind-the-scenes posts that show how close she is with her fellow stars. Aside from her great dynamic with fellow actors, Revord also has a great relationship with many of Young Sheldon's crew members.
So the ending of The Big Bang Theory prequel not only means the end of her employment but also the end of an era when it comes to personal and professional relationships. After season 7, it will be nearly impossible to assemble everyone that she has spent her time with on the set again.
Young Sheldon Has Long Failed Missy
All of the Coopers are better in Young Sheldon than in The Big Bang Theory, which poses major inconsistencies with regard to the shows' storytelling. Despite being a more fleshed-out character, however, Missy remains underserved in the prequel. Sheldon's twin sister only appeared twice in The Big Bang Theory, but she was still able to make an impression — something that Young Sheldon benefits from as the prequel delves deeper into Sheldon's childhood in Texas. Unfortunately, it has failed to fully capitalize on Missy's popularity. Instead of leaning into it, Young Sheldon tends to relegate the only Cooper daughter to a supporting character role when she could be so much more.
While the prequel's true lead is Sheldon, it has diversified its storytelling in the past few years, giving the rest of the Coopers increased attention. Given this, one would assume that Missy would be given her own compelling arc, especially since it would effectively juxtapose what was happening with Sheldon.
However, that wasn't the case. The CBS comedy continued to overlook the character, only shining a light on her when she is needed for other characters' storylines. This is so disappointing, considering that Missy is actually the best Cooper family member — something that she has proven so many times over the course of six seasons.
Missy’s Young Sheldon Season 6 Arc Makes Its Cancelation Worse
CBS seemed to have finally realized the error of their ways with Missy late in Young Sheldon season 6. In an effort to address the issue, the family comedy baked the criticism it was getting into its storytelling with the only Cooper daughter actually complaining about her parents routinely overlooking her.
Busy with other things happening in their lives, including having borderline inappropriate relationships with their so-called special friends, George and Mary continued to ignore Missy's complaints. This drove her to rebel, putting herself in dangerous situations in an effort to get their attention. Missy came around in the Young Sheldon season 6 finale, promising that she would behave.
Since Young Sheldon season 7 will only have 14 episodes, it's highly unlikely that it can devote enough time to actually properly redeem Missy, unfortunately. The comedy already has a string of lingering plot lines to get through, which includes Mandy and Georgie's possible marriage, George's cheating scandal and subsequent death, as well as Mary's relationship with Pastor Rob and her church. That's on top of Sheldon's personal arc as he transitions out of Texas. Chances are that CBS will have to ultimately decrease the screentime on Missy's story, if not totally drop it, to make sure that all the aforementioned narratives are dealt with before the show bows out.
Missy Could Have Taken Over Young Sheldon After Sheldon Leaves
Thanks to Young Sheldon diversifying its storytelling, it has become appealing to a wider audience while also making sure that it doesn't feel repetitive. While Sheldon already has his followers coming from his time in The Big Bang Theory, his siblings also have their own fans after the prequel spends more time with them. Although Young Sheldon has underutilized Missy, she has still managed to become a fan favorite, making the most out of the usual limited screen time that she gets. Between this and the unexplored personal arc of the only Cooper daughter, CBS could have continued the prequel by shifting the focus to Sheldon's sister.
Since Sheldon left Medford High School, Missy's school life has been barely focused on. Once Sheldon moves to California, Young Sheldon, which can be rebranded as a true family comedy, The Coopers, can tackle her more stereotypical growing pains being in high school. Sheldon didn't reveal much about Missy's life after he left Medford, giving CBS more creative wiggle room to develop her arc moving forward.
