The Gilded Age creator Julian Fellowes has addressed the final twist in season 2, saying that the event was planned from the very beginning of the series. During season 2, episode 8, "In Terms of Winning and Losing," Marian (Louisa Jacobson) rejects Dashiell's (David Furr) proposal and soon ends up with Larry Russell (Harry Richardson). The pair share a kiss during the season finale, confirming they are now together after many episodes hinting at the prospect.
Speaking with TVLine, Fellowes addressed how The Gilded Age season 2's ending kiss between Marian and Larry had been set up from the start. The creator explained that as far back as casting for the series, it was clear the duo would be a couple at some point during the show. Check out what Fellowes had to say below:
I think it was always in the background. Certainly when the actors were cast, they were cast as a couple who looked compatible on screen if we got there. You can never be too definite, because sometimes performances don’t happen, or things occur, or ideas come in and your original plan isn’t what’s adhered to. But in that instance, I think we always knew they were headed for each other.
What Marian & Larry’s Relationship Means For The Gilded Age Season 3?
Despite being presented as Marian’s love interest from the start, her marriage to Dashiell would mean she would have to stop her career to settle down with him. In addition, she has been shown to have chemistry with Larry throughout the series, forging a friendship that could be seen as more engaging and could lead to an understandable romance. This is why the twist occurred, furthering both characters and the relationship between them that's been established.
For now, it's unclear what the young, budding romance will mean for The Gilded Age season 3. While the show hasn't been officially renewed as of writing, Fellowes also indicated the romance will see Agnes and Bertha react to the new relationship. This means more drama will come in future episodes as Marian and Larry's partnership impacts the world around them.
The Gilded Age follows the Russell family, whose efforts to be accepted by high society New York mirrors the real-life Vanderbilt family.
In addition to his new relationship with Marian, Larry has also agreed to join Jack's business, setting the stage for even more development for the venture. Given his new role, this may impact the duo's newfound relationship in the future, revealing new aspects as their lives continue to shift. Just how much The Gilded Age will change because of its ending twist won't be revealed until it's clear season 3 is on the docket.
