"TMNT 2: Mutant Mayhem Madness - A Deep Dive into What We Know So Far!"

Subverting many fans’ expectations, 2023’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has proven a smash hit with audiences and critics alike. Following Michael Bay’s TMNT franchise, which was near-universally lampooned for its characterization and tone, Mutant Mayhem has steered the course, resulting in the shelled heroes’ greatest foray onto the big screen to date.

While the story is a relatively generic origin tale—the adolescent turtles writhe against their overprotective father figure, Splinter, while seeking to gain validation from the rest of the world—the animation style from Mikros Animation and Cinesite is the movie’s true trump card.

TMNT: Mutant Mayhem 2 Was Confirmed Before the First Movie

Paramount’s announcement of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2 initially came as a shock, as—at the point of declaration—the first movie hadn’t even dropped yet. However, Paramount already knew they were on to a winner, and Mutant Mayhem’s impressive reception and box office will only have bolstered the studio’s confidence.

While a release date is yet to be confirmed, the movie’s success and cost-effective animation style means fans can expect a relatively short wait. However, it is important to note that the release date may be pushed back as a result of Paramount’s unwavering confidence in the Rowe-helmed franchise.

In addition to a sequel, two seasons of a Paramount+ series, Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, have also been confirmed. Intended as a bridge between the two movies, fans will have to wait for this series to land before seeing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles back on the big screen. While the wait may upset some, it demonstrates just how confident Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies are in the fresh life they have injected into the franchise.

Nickelodeon chief Brian Robbins made rebooting the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles after Michael Bay’s disastrous 2016 effort, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows,a top priority, and so far, that decision has reaped dividends. Audience goodwill only serves to compound excitement in the highly-anticipated sequel.

Who Will Be Involved?

Eastman never thought the first issue of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book would sell enough to pay his uncle back.

Details regarding Mutant Mayhem 2 are currently scant, but some logical conjecture can be made. For instance, it was Rowe’s decision to lean into the influences of his formative years that granted the first Mutant Mayhem much of its heart.

Therefore, it seems highly unlikely Paramount will choose a fresh director for the sequel, especially given Rowe’s additional success with properties such as Disenchantment and Gravity Falls. Similarly, Mikros Animation and Cinesite worked wonders, bringing Rowe’s magic to life; given their visual triumph with the first film, it seems likely these animation studios will return for round two.

However, Cinesite’s future with the franchise is more uncertain, as the studio only provided twenty-five minutes of footage to Mikros Animation’s seventy-four. If Mikros can stick to a deadline, Cinesite may prove to be one of the casualties of Mutant Mayhem’s sequel.

The extant cast is also expected to remain intact. This makes sense, as newcomers Micah Abbey, Sharon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu, and Brady Noon did such a fabulous job of bringing Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo, and Raphael to life, respectively.

Given the four stars’ relatively unknown status when the first movie came out, their paychecks are presumably lesser than more established stars, making their retainment in Mutant Mayhem’s sequel all the more likely.

Veteran cast member duties fall to Jackie Chan, who will no doubt return as the turtle’s overbearing mentor, Splinter. This is further compounded due to Rowe’s open, ecstatic feelings toward bagging Chan in the first place.

“We wanted him to do this, and we had no idea,” Rowe told San Diego Comic-Con in 2023. “We were like, ‘he’ll never say yes to this, but let’s try it.’ But he was in. He was familiar with the franchise.” According to Rowe, Chan brings “warmth” and “humanity” to Splinter, so with this director at the helm, fans can no doubt anticipate Chan’s return to the franchise.

What Story Will TMNT: Mutant Mayhem 2Tell?

While Mutant Mayhem was a joyous ride in and of itself, the movie consciously did much to set up its already-announced sequel.

This was largely achieved through the post-credits scene. Cynthia—Mutant Mayhem’s principal antagonist—is seen surveying the turtles in the TCRI lab in the company of the captive and now unmutated Superfly, hinting at a larger role for both characters in the sequel.

However, more excitement exists regarding Cynthia’s subsequent command, “Bring me the Shredder,” which then cuts to the villain looming beyond New York. As fans of the franchise know, Shredder stands as the Teenage Ninja Turtles’ most popular and iconic villain and Mutant Mayhem’s post-credit scene establishes him as a significant threat for the sequel.

Therefore, it’s safe to assume Cynthia will take a backseat to Shredder as the main antagonist in Teenage Mutant Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2. Naturally, this leaves fans with an overwhelming question: who will voice Shredder in the sequel?

Unfortunately, details are currently excruciatingly scant, but that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from already churning. Names like Kevin Michael Richardson have already been floated, given his success in bringing Shredder to life in animated properties such as Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:

Danger of the Ooze. One of the principal appeals of Mutant Mayhem was how it was so firmly rooted in nostalgia, so Richardson seems likely for the shortlist, but he is not the only option. Many fans feel seasoned voice actors such as Peter Seranfinowicz and Will Arnett could do just as good a job, or Paramount may choose to go in a completely different direction.

Given Hollywood’s recent efforts to combat decades of cultural appropriation, Rowe may decide it’s time for homegrown Japanese talent to shine. Current frontrunners among fans include names such as Godzilla's Ken Watanabe, but this is pure conjecture at this point. Ultimately, fans will have to wait to see which direction Rowe decides to take.
